Ferrosilicon magnesium FeSiMg7 is used for in-mold modification in the production of high-strength cast iron castings.
Almost all high-strength cast irons are produced with the addition of magnesium, which promotes the formation of graphite of the required structure. Magnesium is a reactive, rapidly evaporating metal, with limited solubility in cast iron, whose boiling point is much lower than that of molten cast iron. Thus, metallic magnesium is practically impossible to use when modifying the melt.
The use of magnesium is simplified if it is included in an inexpensive material that is suitable for cast iron and which forms compounds with magnesium, thereby reducing its vapor pressure and, as a consequence, the chemical reactivity of this element. Silicon and high-silicon alloys - such as 45% ferrosilicon - meet all of the above requirements.
